Here's a description of the computer that I'm currently using.
Hopefully I'll take some photos of it soon and put them on here too.
| Case: | CCCL full tower ATX with 3 additional 8cm fans - Great for cooling an Overclocked system! |
| Motherboard: | ABit BH6 - Cracking Slot 1 board for Overclocking thanks to "SoftMenu". |
| CPU: | Intel Celeron 300A (with 128k L2 Cache) - Overclocked at 450MHz (100 x 4.5)!! 1/8th of the price of a PII 450 and with the L2 cache at full processor speed (PII's L2 cache runs at 1/2 processor speed) overclocked Celeron's tend to outperform them too!! It ain't crashed yet, by the way! |
| SCSI: | Adaptec 2940 Ultra Wide SCSI Controller. |
| HDD1: | IBM UltraStar (I think??!) 4.5GB UW SCSI - My OS drive (1.5GB for Win98, 3GB for NT4). |
| HDD2: | Quantum Fireball EX 6.4GB IDE UATA - Great price for nice capacity (just used for Win98). |
| CDROM: | Plextor UltraPlex 32TSi - 32xMAX 14xMIN apparently. Goes fast enough for me, anyway. |
| ZIP: | Iomega internal SCSI ZIP 100 drive - bought it just before the ZIP 250s came out!! Bummer! |
| FDD: | 2x Panasonic 1.44MB floppy drives - Sad, but I bought 2 cos they're under a tenner each and it looks cool having 2 floppies! Plus, I finally get to use that second connector on the floppy cable! |
| Video: | ASUS V3400 TNT 16MB SGRAM - Goes like the clappers with 2D and 3D stuff! Recommended as the best NVidia Riva TNT card by Tom's Hardware Guide. ASUS underclock this card, but a small tweak to the ini file before installing the drivers sets it at the NVidia recommended rates. It's also got it's own little heatsink and fan on the chip to keep it all cool! |
| Monitor: | iiyama Vision Master Pro 400 (17") - sorted, with Diamondtron CRT, really cool display. Worth every penny. I always used to use a cheap screen, then realised that it's the thing I look at all time when on the PC (I guess that's quite obvious), so I bought this one. 1024x768 100Hz refresh is great. |
| Sound: | Creative Labs Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold - Does everything I want of it and the MIDI synth's really nice for messing about with sequencers and stuff. Can't be bothered shelling out on a PCI sound card cos it's fine for me. | Modem: | Rockwell based 56K V90 internal modem - does the job, but ISDN would be nice! |
| Scanner: | UMAX Astra 610S - quite a cheap, but adequate, SCSI scanner. |
| Printer: | Epson Stylus 500 Colour - getting a little dated but it does me fine. |
| LAN Card: | Realtek 8029 PCI Combo card - perfectly fine for a LAN with your mates and for games. |
| Input: | Cherry RS6000M (if that means anything to anyone?!) and a Microsoft Wheel Mouse. |
| Games Input: | Gravis GrIP Multiport - A great piece of kit which I think Gravis stopped making. You plug it into your 15pin joystick port and it's a box with 4x 9pin ports for the GrIP pads, each of which have 8 buttons (ABC,XYZ and LR + D-Pad) so you can play FIFA with all your mates! |
